What Is Abdominoplasty?

What Exercise Cannot Fix — Surgery Can

A tummy tuck — medically known as abdominoplasty — is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the underlying abdominal wall muscles. It is one of the most effective body contouring procedures available, and among the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures worldwide.

After pregnancy, the rectus abdominis muscles often separate — a condition called diastasis recti. The overlying skin stretches beyond its elastic limit. No amount of planks, crunches, or dietary restriction restores this structure. Abdominoplasty directly addresses the anatomy that has changed.

At Elore Aesthetics in Islamabad, tummy tuck procedures are performed by board-certified plastic surgeons in accredited surgical facilities — with full pre-operative assessment, anaesthesiologist support, and structured post-operative follow-up care.

Types of Abdominoplasty

Which Procedure Is Right for You?

The type of abdominoplasty is selected based on your anatomy, the degree of skin laxity, and whether liposuction is required alongside the procedure.

Full Abdominoplasty

Most Common

The complete abdominoplasty addresses the entire abdomen from hip to hip. The surgeon repairs separated rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis recti), removes excess skin, repositions the umbilicus (belly button), and creates a flat, toned abdominal contour.

Ideal For

Post-pregnancy abdomen, significant weight loss, diastasis recti, loose skin above and below the navel

Mini Abdominoplasty

Less Scarring

The mini tummy tuck targets the lower abdomen only — below the navel. A smaller incision is made, there is no repositioning of the umbilicus, and recovery is faster. Suitable for clients with localised lower abdominal laxity.

Ideal For

Mild lower abdominal skin laxity, post-C-section overhang, no significant muscle separation

Extended Abdominoplasty

Full Contouring

Extends the standard full abdominoplasty to include the flanks (love handles) and lateral thighs. The incision wraps around the sides to remove excess skin that falls outside the standard treatment zone.

Ideal For

Significant weight loss affecting flanks and thighs alongside the abdomen

Abdominoplasty with Liposuction

Combined Procedure

Liposuction is often performed alongside abdominoplasty to remove stubborn fat deposits from the flanks, waist, and upper abdomen — areas that skin removal alone cannot address. Together they deliver a more comprehensive body contour result.

Ideal For

Clients with both excess skin and localised fat deposits requiring combined contouring

What Abdominoplasty Corrects

Four Concerns Surgery Resolves

Loose, Sagging Abdominal Skin

Excess skin that hangs or folds after pregnancy or weight loss — cannot be resolved through exercise or non-surgical treatments. Abdominoplasty physically removes the excess tissue.

Diastasis Recti

Separation of the paired rectus abdominis muscles — extremely common after pregnancy. Creates a protruding abdomen that persists regardless of fitness level. Abdominoplasty includes internal suturing (fascial plication) to close the gap.

Post-Pregnancy Abdomen

Pregnancy stretches both the abdominal skin and the underlying fascia and muscles beyond their elastic limit. Diet and exercise cannot restore this architecture. Abdominoplasty is the only procedure that addresses all three layers.

Stubborn Lower Abdominal Fat

A localised fat deposit that sits below the navel and persists despite a healthy weight and regular exercise. When combined with liposuction, abdominoplasty removes this fat alongside the excess skin for a flat, defined result.

From Consultation to Recovery

Your Surgical Journey

01

Consultation & Planning

A detailed surgical consultation assesses your abdominal anatomy — skin laxity, degree of diastasis recti, fat distribution, and overall health. We review your medical history, discuss your expectations, take measurements and photos, and design your personalised surgical plan.

02

Anaesthesia & Preparation

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia by a board-certified anaesthesiologist. The procedure typically takes 2.5–4 hours. Antibiotic prophylaxis is administered pre-operatively. The abdomen is marked in the pre-operative suite.

03

The Surgery

A low horizontal incision is made from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. The abdominal skin is elevated, diastasis recti is repaired with internal sutures, excess skin is removed, and the umbilicus is repositioned through a new opening. The incision is closed in layers.

04

Recovery & Follow-Up

Most clients are discharged the same day or after one night observation. Surgical drains may be placed for 5–7 days. A compression garment is worn for 6 weeks. Follow-up appointments are scheduled at 1 week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months post-surgery.

Recovery Guide

Week by Week Recovery

Abdominoplasty recovery is a gradual process. Most clients are surprised by how manageable the first week is with proper support and pain relief. Here is an honest, realistic timeline.

Compression garment worn for 6 weeks
Drains removed at 5–7 days
Follow-up at 1 week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months
Day 1–3

Rest at home. Swelling and discomfort managed with prescribed pain relief. Walk gently — do not lie completely flat. Surgical drains in place.

Week 1–2

Drains typically removed. Able to move more comfortably. Light activity around the home. Avoid lifting anything over 2kg. First follow-up appointment.

Week 3–4

Significantly improved mobility. Many clients return to desk-based work. Swelling continues to reduce daily. Compression garment worn throughout.

Week 6

Most daily activities resumed. Light exercise (walking, swimming) approved. Scar maturing — beginning to fade from pink to flesh-coloured. Garment may be discontinued.

Month 3–6

Final results becoming visible as swelling fully resolves. Scar continues to mature and fade. Return to all exercise including core training with surgeon clearance.

Month 12+

Scar fully matured — typically a fine, low, discreet line within the bikini line. Abdominal contour at its final, permanent result.

Patient Selection

Good Candidates & Who Should Wait

Ideal Candidates

  • Completed childbearing (pregnancy after abdominoplasty reverses results)
  • At or near a stable, healthy weight — abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure
  • Non-smoker, or able to stop smoking at least 6 weeks before and after surgery
  • No active medical conditions that impair wound healing
  • Loose abdominal skin and/or diastasis recti that has not responded to exercise
  • Realistic expectations — abdominoplasty reshapes, not perfects

Better to Wait If

  • Planning future pregnancies
  • Significant BMI above surgical threshold
  • Active smokers — dramatically increases complication risk
  • Expecting to lose substantial weight after surgery

A consultation will confirm whether abdominoplasty is appropriate for your situation — or whether a different approach is recommended first.
