Everything you need to know before booking laser hair removal in Islamabad — how the laser works, how many sessions you need, whether it hurts, and if it is safe for Pakistani skin tones.
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in Pakistan — and for good reason. The prospect of permanently reducing unwanted hair, without razors, waxing appointments, or threading, is genuinely life-changing for many people. But also one of the most misunderstood, with a great deal of confusion around how many sessions are needed, whether it hurts, and whether it is safe for darker Pakistani skin.
This guide answers every question our clients in Islamabad ask before booking — clearly and without the marketing spin.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Actually Work?
Laser hair removal works on a principle called selective photothermolysis. A precise wavelength of laser light is emitted at the skin. The light is selectively absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle — the same pigment that gives hair its colour. The melanin absorbs the laser energy and converts it to heat, which damages the follicle and its surrounding stem cells, inhibiting future hair growth.
The surrounding skin is not targeted (or is minimally affected) because the laser wavelength is chosen to be preferentially absorbed by the hair follicle, not the epidermis. This is why laser works best on hairs with good contrast between hair colour and skin tone — dark hair on lighter skin absorbs more laser energy. However, with the right laser type (specifically Nd:YAG), darker South Asian skin tones can be treated very safely and effectively.
Why Multiple Sessions Are Necessary
Hair grows in cycles. The laser only destroys follicles in their active anagen (growth) phase. At any given time, only 15–20% of your hairs are in this phase — the rest are in the transitional (catagen) or resting/shedding (telogen) phases and will not be destroyed. Multiple sessions, spaced to catch successive batches of anagen hairs, are therefore essential.
Which Laser Is Best? A Note on Laser Types
Not all laser hair removal machines are equal. The three most common laser types used for hair removal are:
| Laser Type | Wavelength | Best For | South Asian Skin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alexandrite | 755 nm | Fair–olive skin (Fitzpatrick I–III) | Not recommended |
| Diode | 808 nm | Light–medium skin (Fitzpatrick I–IV) | Use with caution |
| Nd:YAG | 1064 nm | All skin types, including dark (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) | ✓ Gold standard |
For Pakistani and South Asian clients (Fitzpatrick III–V), the Nd:YAG at 1064 nm is the safest and most effective choice. Its longer wavelength penetrates deeper into the dermis to reach the follicle while passing more safely through the melanin-rich epidermis of darker skin, dramatically reducing the risk of surface burns or pigmentation changes.
Which Areas Can Be Treated?
Laser hair removal is safe for virtually any area of the body where unwanted hair grows. Popular treatment areas at our Islamabad clinic include:
Note: Laser cannot be safely applied to the area directly around the eyes (eyelids and brows require specialised protection). Clients with tattoos in the treatment area should inform their practitioner — the tattoo pigment can absorb laser energy and should be avoided.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
The number of sessions depends on the treatment area, your hair type, skin tone, and hormonal factors. General guidelines:
| Area | Sessions | Interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper lip / chin | 8–12 | 4–6 weeks | Hormonal areas need more sessions |
| Underarms | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | One of the fastest-responding areas |
| Full legs | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | Large area; significant time saving |
| Brazilian bikini | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | Sensitive area; topical numbing available |
| Back / chest | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | Hormonal area — may need maintenance |
| Full face | 8–12 | 4–6 weeks | Requires careful laser selection |
Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for Pakistani Skin Tones?
Yes — definitively, when performed correctly. The risk of pigmentation complications from laser on darker skin comes from using the wrong laser type or incorrect settings. Pakistani skin typically falls in Fitzpatrick types III–V. Here is what safe treatment looks like:
- The correct laser: Nd:YAG (1064 nm) for Fitzpatrick III–V skin
- Conservative starting parameters with gradual adjustment based on skin response
- Sun avoidance for 4 weeks before and after each session (UV exposure significantly increases PIH risk)
- No treatment when the skin is actively tanned
- Practitioner experience with South Asian skin assessment
