The Science

How Laser Breaks Down Tattoo Ink

Tattoo ink is deposited in the dermis — the deep layer of skin — where it is trapped inside cells called macrophages. The ink particles are too large for the immune system to clear naturally, which is why tattoos are permanent.

Q-switched and picosecond lasers use selective photothermolysis — delivering ultra-short, high-energy pulses at wavelengths specifically absorbed by tattoo ink chromophores. The rapid energy absorption creates a photoacoustic shockwave that shatters ink particles into microscopic fragments.

These smaller fragments are then recognised and cleared by macrophages via the lymphatic system over the following 6–8 weeks — causing progressive fading between sessions. Each session shatters another layer of ink until clearance is achieved.

The Right Wavelength for Every Ink Colour

Different ink colours absorb different wavelengths of light. Treatment is matched to your specific tattoo's ink palette — not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Q-Switched Nd:YAG 1064nm

Black & Dark Ink

The gold standard for removing black, dark blue and dark grey tattoo ink. The 1064nm wavelength is preferentially absorbed by dark chromophores — delivering ultra-short nanosecond pulses that shatter ink particles via photoacoustic (mechanical shock) effect rather than heat, minimising thermal damage to surrounding tissue.

Ideal For

Black tattoos, dark blue ink, dark grey shading, all Fitzpatrick skin types

Q-Switched Nd:YAG 532nm (KTP)

Red & Warm Tones

The 1064nm beam passed through a potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) crystal halves the wavelength to 532nm — specifically absorbed by red, orange and warm-toned pigments. A single device delivers both wavelengths, allowing multi-colour tattoos to be treated in the same session.

Ideal For

Red ink, orange, yellow, warm-toned pigments, cosmetic tattoo correction

Picosecond Laser

Faster Clearance

Delivers energy in picoseconds (trillionths of a second) versus nanoseconds — generating a more powerful photoacoustic shockwave that shatters ink into finer particles. Finer particles are cleared more efficiently by macrophages via the lymphatic system. Requires fewer sessions than nanosecond Q-switched lasers for comparable clearance.

Ideal For

Stubborn tattoos, previously treated resistant ink, faster overall clearance

Multi-Wavelength Protocol

Multi-Colour Tattoos

Complex multi-colour tattoos — containing black, red, blue, green and yellow — require multiple wavelengths targeting different chromophores. A treatment protocol is designed using complementary wavelengths across sessions to systematically clear each colour. Green and light blue are the most resistant pigments to remove.

Ideal For

Professional multi-colour tattoos, sleeve tattoos, complex designs

What We Treat

All Tattoo Types Treated

Professional Tattoos

Applied with machines at consistent depth using high-quality concentrated inks — generally require more sessions (8–15) than amateur tattoos due to higher ink density and deeper deposition in the dermis.

Amateur Tattoos

Applied by hand or improvised tools at inconsistent depth using varied inks. Often shallower and less dense than professional work — typically clear in fewer sessions (4–8). Indian ink and carbon-based inks respond fastest.

Cosmetic Tattoos

Microblading, eyebrow tattoos, lip liner and permanent makeup. Can be removed or corrected but requires caution — some cosmetic pigments contain iron oxides that paradoxically darken on initial laser exposure before lightening. Test patch essential.

Traumatic Tattoos

Road rash, gravel or industrial debris embedded in the dermis following accidents. Particles are often carbon-based and respond well to Q-switched Nd:YAG 1064nm. Depth and particle type assessed at consultation.

Step by Step

Your Treatment Journey

01

Consultation & Assessment

Fitzpatrick skin type classified (I–VI). Tattoo assessed for ink colours, age, size, location, layering and prior treatments. Number of sessions estimated. Patch test recommended for darker skin types and cosmetic tattoos. Treatment interval, fluence and spot size planned for your specific tattoo and skin.

02

Preparation & Protection

Topical anaesthetic cream applied 45–60 minutes before treatment. Eyes protected with laser-safe goggles. Treatment area cleaned and marked. Skin cooled with cryogen spray or chilled air device to reduce discomfort and epidermal thermal damage during the session.

03

Laser Treatment

Q-switched or picosecond pulses delivered across the tattoo at calibrated fluence (J/cm²). Immediate "frosting" — a transient white frost on the skin surface — confirms correct energy absorption. Each pulse is felt as a sharp snap. Session duration: 5–30 minutes depending on tattoo size. Ink particles are shattered into micro-fragments.

04

Healing & Next Session

Shattered ink particles phagocytosed by macrophages and cleared via the lymphatic system over 6–8 weeks — this biological clearance is what fades the tattoo between sessions. Minimum 6–8 weeks between sessions allows full immune clearance before the next treatment. Aftercare cream and sun protection applied.

Aftercare Guide

Session by Session Healing

Most of the tattoo fading happens between sessions — not during the laser treatment itself. The 6–8 week interval is when your immune system clears the shattered ink. Aftercare compliance directly impacts results.

SPF 50 daily — sun avoidance critical
Do not pick scabs — scarring risk
Minimum 6–8 weeks between sessions
Immediately After

Frosting (white surface reaction), redness and mild swelling. Normal and expected — frosting resolves within 30 minutes. Cold compress applied in clinic.

Day 1–3

Redness, tenderness and possible pinpoint bleeding or small blisters. Skin healing. Keep area clean, apply prescribed aftercare cream. Do not pick or pop blisters.

Day 4–14

Scabbing and peeling as the skin heals. Allow scabs to fall naturally — picking delays healing and risks scarring. Sun protection essential. Tattoo appears similar or slightly faded.

Week 3–6

Macrophage-mediated clearance of shattered ink particles via lymphatic drainage actively occurring. Visible fading begins to appear. Darker skin tones monitored for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Week 6–8

Significant fading visible in most cases. Skin fully healed and ready for the next session. Minimum 6–8 week interval ensures complete immune clearance before re-treating.

Full Course

5–15 sessions typically required for complete clearance — varies by ink type, colour, density, depth and Fitzpatrick skin type. Black ink clears fastest; green and light blue are most resistant.

Patient Selection

Good Candidates & Things to Consider

Ideal Candidates

  • Any tattoo colour — different wavelengths target different chromophores
  • All Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI with appropriate laser and parameters
  • Amateur, professional, cosmetic and traumatic tattoos
  • Old tattoos (more faded) typically clear faster than fresh ones
  • Non-smokers — smoking impairs lymphatic clearance of ink particles
  • Willing to commit to 6–8 week intervals between sessions
  • Realistic expectation: complete clearance not guaranteed for all inks

Things to Consider

  • Active tanning or recent sun exposure on the area — increases PIH risk
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infection, open wounds or herpes outbreak over the tattoo
  • Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) use in the past 6 months
  • Expecting single-session removal — multiple sessions are always required
  • Keloid scarring history — laser may trigger keloid formation

A test patch session is recommended for darker skin types and cosmetic tattoos before committing to a full course.
